Organized caving in the United States is done under the auspices of two different groups: The National Speleological Society (NSS), and the Cave Research Foundation (CRF). The NSS consists of a
number of chapers, called “grottos.” There are almost 200 grottos throughout the U.S. Most grottos have monthly meetings where they usually feature slide shows or demonstrations, followed by a business meeting. The best
way to become involved with a grotto is to contact the NSS and request a list of grottos in your area. Some grottos are special in that they are student grottos (open only to students of a given university) or informal
regional grottos that meet only once a year. The contact person for the grotto can tell you more about that grotto works.
